The history of perforated metal spans several millennia. Its usage has varied from decorative to functional — very often at the same time. It has appeared in many cultures and for many purposes throughout time, from ancient arts and crafts, to warfare technology, to industrial filtration and sorting mechanisms. Today, perforated metal has returned as a highly decorative and expressive artistic medium.
It was just over ten years ago that perforated metal entered into a new era, a golden age for metal imagery created through selective perf. For many years, perforated metal was an industrial product. Today, perforated metal is part of a new renaissance.
Earlier this month, Grace Farms unveiled The River building in New Canaan, Connecticut. Designed by SANAA with Handel Architects serving as the executive architect, the building features a subtle dual-curving aluminum roof by Zahner.
