Charlottesville Dairy Market Features Zahner Star Blue™ Copper, Wins Prestigious Copper Alliance Award for Restoration
The Monticello Dairy in Charlottesville, Virginia, underwent a remarkable transformation, breathing new life into this cherished community landmark.
The architects at Cunningham | Quill Architects, in collaboration with Hourigan, embarked on a mission to reinvigorate the space into a vibrant hub for the community. The culmination of these efforts was recently recognized with a North American Copper In Architecture Award in the restoration category.
Honoring the site’s industrial legacy while embracing a fresh identity, the team carefully selected materials that paid homage to the Dairy Market’s heritage while signaling a contemporary direction. A standout feature of this revitalization is the use of pre-patinated, verdigris copper flat-lock panels — Zahner Star Blue Copper — seamlessly integrated with the original “Virginia” red brick of the Dairy Market. This marriage of materials not only enhances the visual appeal but also highlights the office building’s architectural finesse, with the glass curtain wall serving as a modern contrast to the historic elements.
The Dairy Market and office building stand as symbols of sustainability and responsible design practices with their LEED Silver certification. Local materials were prioritized, existing structures were salvaged and restored, and energy-efficient systems were incorporated into the design. Opting for copper cladding further underscores the commitment to creating a building that stands the test of time while minimizing its environmental footprint.
